TUTU: EXIT OF A VOICE FOR LIBERATION

 Modest Thoughts with Ayuba Yilgak'ha

In a world where there is so many contradictions: social inequalities, injustices,
prejudices, crimes and several other unsettling issues affecting humanity, there is no end to the need for great minds like Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu, Martin Luther King Jr., etc. In the eye of the world, these personalities were charismatic and pragmatic leaders whose lives significantly touched the world in many ways than one. They were men with many parts, enigmas and harbingers of hope for social liberation worldwide.

In this piece, the subject of discussion is Desmond Tutu. I came across this great name in a General Studies (GST) class during my first year in the University of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. A renowned scholar of African folklore and tradition, Prof. Ajaode shared with us a profound quote attributed to Tutu. It reads, "When the missionaries came to Africa they had the Bible and we had the land. They said 'Let us pray.' We closed our eyes. When we opened them we had the Bible and they had the land."! This was a metaphorical insinuation of how Africans were tricked into surrounding their rich land, the 'Black Gold' through religion. In other words, the phenomenal submission has, ever after, become a reference point for robust debate on colonialism and underdevelopment in Africa.

Desmond Mpilo Tutu hails from Klerksdorp, a community in Southern DC, North West, South Africa. His parents were Zachariah Zililo Tutu (father) who was a teacher by profession and Allen Dorothea Mavoertsek Mathlare (mother). Therefore, he was born of a mixed Motswana and Xhosa background where his father and mother respectively belonged as tribes. The family background was a mean one.

Tutu was born on October 7, 1931 at his home town, Klerksdorp, South Africa. He had his early education at South African missionary schools where his father taught. His early ambition was to pursue a career in medicine, but due to financial constraints, he enrolled in a teacher's training where he graduated and picked up a teaching job in 1955. He married to Nomalizo Leah Shenaxane that same year, but left the teaching profession two years after, that is, 1957. He had four children, signifying the man was a responsible family man.

He died weeks after FW de Klerk, the last Apartheid President died at 85 years old. Before his death at the age 90 on December 26, 2021 in Cape Town, was an ordained Anglican Priest. Despite his poor family heritage, Desmond Tutu managed to rise to global reckoning through proven courage, doggedness and consistency.

Tutu was a myth maker in the order of great world leaders like George Washington of USA, Winston Churchill of the UK, Nelson Mandela of South Africa, etc. "All nations generate self-serving myths that show the people and the country in a favourable moral light. Quite often, these myths focus upon an individual hero who simultaneously embodies or express the national character"(Boller, 1981).

The vocal Anglican cleric was ordained Anglican priest in 1961 after he successfully graduated from St. Peter’s Theological College, Johannesburg, South Africa. In 1966, Tutu also backed a master's of Art (M.A) degree at King’s College, London. This feat further equipment and prepared him for the task ahead: ministering the liberating power of God's word!

Desmond Tutu was the first African Bishop who held the position of Bishop and Arch Bishop of Johannesburg from 1985 to 1986 and then Cape Town from 1986 to 1996 respectively. These were rare opportunities for him to demonstrate the capacity of the black race in church leadership and he delivered. It goes to show without saying that leadership capabilities are not dependent on one's race or colour, but a function of commitment and determination backed by the grace of God which does not show favouritism.

The political matrix under which Tutu operated, in his active years in ministry, was the apartheid regime. Apartheid is described as a draconian regime in South Africa, where a white minority took charge and controlled the country's national life where Blacks were in the majority. It can also be perceived as racial imperialism or racial domination of a black majority by a white minority. It was one of the worst colonial legacies in human history. As bad as the system was, this departed rare gem, rose to prominence.

Desmond Tutu was a South African national who became a global figure following his non -violent crusade against the unpopular apartheid regime in his country. He was appointed to take charge of the popular Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which investigated human rights violations as a means deep wounds created by apartheid contradictions. Tutu shouldered this herculean task with distinction, a development that won him numerous prestigious awards like the Nobel Peace prize in 1984, the US Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009, The Mo Ibrahim Foundation award in 2012 and Templeton Prize 2013 amongst others.

Perhaps, part of the most enduring legacies of this great son of Africa and the universal preacher of the gospel was his deep insight and life-changing thoughts or teachings. He, for instance, demonstrated how much humans need each other in the following words:

"None of us comes into the world fully formed. We would not know how to think, or walk, or speak, or behave as human beings unless we learned it from other human beings. We need other human beings in order to be human. I am because other people are. A person is entitled to stable community life, and the first of these communities is the family." This gospel corroborates several other postulations such as "No one is an island, entirely to himself...", "Nobody has the monopoly of knowledge", etc. There is power in our unity and community life. There's a lot to make out of life when we harmonise and appropriate our talents together. The power in our interdependence on one another!

Like Nelson Mandela, Lucky Dube, Late Bishop Tutu was one of the greatest social crusaders and moral compasses the world has ever produced. Morality are those good or bad things one does within the context, loose or varied cultural dictates but strict guide one's conscience. It is mirrored within the context of this universal charge: 'Do unto others what you would want them to do unto you.'! Tutu lived his life throughout projecting cherishable moral values the world craves: love, respect for a fellow human, equity, fairness, etc., without bias or prejudices. His words, "Do your little bit of good where you are; it is those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world." What a profound lubricant for universal peace and prosperity.

Though a theologian, minister of moral absolutes, strict ordinances of God, Tutu was a tested democrat and an apostle of the democratic dialogue. He strongly believes in the power and superiority of ideas. While alive, he shared one of the thoughts which shaped him. His words: 'My father used to say, "Don't raise your voice. Improve your argument." Good sense does not always lie with the loudest shouters, nor can we say that a large, unruly crowd is always the best arbiter of what is right.'" For this great mind, the superior argument carries the day, there is no democratic credential as potent and outstanding than this. I used to think that politics and religion do not go together, but a lesson from Tutu has convicted me of my mistake. I am sorry, I am grateful.

Until he kissed the earth, Tutu was quite active in condemning evil or injustice whenever he sees one. To his credit were these beautifully knitted diagnoses of the culture of silence in the face of evil: "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse, and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality." This word corroborates other popular epithets: "If you see something, say something"; "the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing"( Edmund Burke). No wonder, he was not complacent and become a unique, but loud voice in condemning the draconian apartheid regime in his country. Arch Bishop Tutu to be a stern critic of the ANC government, especially when the country denies the Dalai  Lama of Tibet clearance (opportunity) to visit South Africa in 2010.

Tutu knew men could offend one another, therefore, he taught about forgiveness and how to do it, saying, "Forgiving is not forgetting; it's actually remembering - Remembering and not using your right to hit back. It's a second chance for a new beginning. And the remembering part is particularly important. Especially if you don't want to repeat what happened." Forgiveness is an act of showing mercy and not retaliating against someone's wrongdoing or being offended by anyone who has been offended. A very important remedy in a falling and infallible word.

Indeed, Tutu was admired as a sage in the rank of Pan human and Pan African nationalist like Martin Luther King Jr., Nkrumah of Ghana, Nelson Mandela, Robert Mugabe, Zik of Africa, Obafemi Awolowo, etc., all of the blessed memory. Great were their speeches. By their literary power, these men moved their generation and world in spectacular ways. Great men minds, movers and shakers of the universe and late Bishop made the list!

If the world and Africa, in particular, must be liberated from its present contradictions, it will start by liberating the mind through testing philosophies like bequeathed us by late Tutu and other respected world liberation fighters. Freedom cannot come to nations by mere wishes, but through sincere commitment and constructive engagement. Lazy and lousy disposition cannot help.

It is instructive to note here that if the world should live out the true meanings of Tutu's postulations, it shall be a better place for all to live and have their being. This man was indeed a priceless asset to humans. Tutu was a brand so special. He can be remembered as God's servant and a patriotic citizen of the world whose primary duty post was South Africa. Apartheid could not endure in the country because it was soundly and openly resisted. This courageous resistance against the regime monster could be deployed as a reliable working tool to end institutional corruption, bad governance, terrorism, social ills of all sorts, even climate change and health epidemics or pandemics. There is power in Courage, Commitment and Consistency against human progress. There is no better way to get this message clearer than reflecting on the life and times of this departed hero.

There is no doubt when the roll call of those who positively impacted the world and  South Africa, in particular, is taken, no historian worth his salt will forget to add Arch Bishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu to the list. The name of this enigma, patriot, churchman, moralist, human rights activist shall forever remain in the Guinness book of records, the respected Hall of Fame of those who really matter in the service of God and humanity. Rest in peace resourceful septuagenarian!

WHY SENATOR ID GYANG DESERVES A SECOND TERM IN OFFICE

WHY SENATOR ID GYANG DESERVES A SECOND TERM IN OFFICE

BY AWENG AKIM & KAZI NANYAH

Dr Myles Munroe of blessed memory gave a simple definition of leadership thus: "leadership includes the capacity to influence, inspire, rally, direct, encourage, motivate, induce, move, mobilize, and activate others to pursue a common goal or purpose while maintaining commitment, momentum, and courage. Senator Istifanus Dung Gyang fits this definition perfectly.

This article seeks to explore and juxtapose Senator I. D. Gyang as a man of unquestionable character and integrity, a man of purpose and a man of passion for his constituents, state and nation at large given the path he has chosen towards delivering quality and representative leadership to the good people of Plateau North with the hope to convince the average Plateau person that the people's senator deserves a second term in office as Senator representing Plateau North in the National Assembly.

Istifanus Dung Gyang (born 1964) is a Nigerian senator representing the good people of Plateau north senatorial district in the 9th assembly. ID Gyang as he is popularly called is one of the household names in the political and humanitarian firmament on the Plateau. A man of humble beginnings rose from a civil servant to permanent secretary before moving to the national assembly, his track record propelled him to the office he serves today. His performance, integrity, and professionalism in carrying out his legislative duties are admirable, it has been commended over time by his constituents, colleagues across different political extractions and other political stakeholders within and outside the state.

The man ID Gyang who has become a study and a wonder, to both admirers and non-admirers was elected based on the manifesto that captured 3 cardinal points and policies; Security, Reconciliation and Empowerment.

Before going into the analysis the reader must be reminded of the primary and secondary functions of a law-making body. The chief function of the Nigerian Senate or Senator is primarily law-making, correction of defects in-laws, approvals of judicial and federal appointments, control of public funds amongst other numerous functions and oversight functions.

One of the cardinal parameters put in place by pundits and political critics, to ascertain the performance of lawmakers is (i) the number of bills sponsored, (ii) constituency projects, (iii) oversight functions.
This article intends to analyse the performance of the Distinguished Senator using these parameters vis a vis his manifesto since resuming legislating in the 9th assembly.

Lawmaking
Senator ID Gyang has Eleven (11) bills to his credit which makes him the 3rd senator in the 9th assembly with the highest number of bills sponsored, two of these bills have received presidential assent already, are the National Fertilizer Production and Regulation Act and the Federal College of Laboratory Science Technology Jos establishment Act. His bills are pro-democracy and pro-people, these bills are mostly targeted at improving our laws and by extension, our lives, thereby strengthening and deepening democracy. The senator has also co-sponsored numerous bills and whoever doubts should surf the internet and get the facts for clarification.
This remarkable record by the senator makes it evident beyond reasonable doubt that he is committed, loyal, and competent for the job he has been mandated to do, which is why the people of Plateau north must as a matter of progress and development give him another nod to continue the good works he has started.
The Distinguished Senator is the deputy chairman senate committee on defence and a member of nine(9) other committees which offers him the opportunity to relate with the executive arm of government and also to ensure that funds are judiciously managed.

Security
The primary objective of every government is the protection of life and properties, and in doing so the three tiers of government have been tasked with responsibilities in seeing that this is achieved. However, the President and commander in chief have the final say.
In fulfilling his mandate Sen ID Gyang has not relented in his efforts of lobbying and speaking up for the improvement and tightening of security within his constituency and the nation at large. As the deputy chairman senate committee on army affairs, ID Gyang has used the advantage to lobby for more support from the military to address the situation ravaging the northern plateau zone. His regular visits to military formations in Riyom, Barkin Ladi, Jos South, Jos North and Bassa shows his unending efforts towards partnering with the military to put an end to this sad situation. He has also used his voice within the chambers to make calls to the president, and the army chiefs concerning the plight of his people, and in all of these efforts every reasonable mind will note the passion and commitment in his beacon and pleas. ID Gyang has been an activist for the devolution of powers from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent Legislative List to empower states to better address the issues of security and development including the establishment of State Police.

Reconciliation
ID Gyang has opened his doors to all communities within the northern zone to change the narrative that all inclusion is limited. He has made contributions in the 6 LGA's of the zone according to their peculiar needs at the material time. The Senator has taken the initiative to facilitate and undertake the reconstruction of destroyed communities to resettle the IDPs in collaboration with the communities at Miango in Bassa LGA, Gana Ropp and Lobiring in B/Ladi LGA. Also the mini-housing estate projects he initiated at Jol in Riyom LGA and Rawuru in B/Ladi LGA with the support of developmental partners. The man IG Gyang overtime has displayed a high sense of responsibility and commitment in carrying out his duties and without a doubt, if given more time, he will reshape the political, developmental and economical landscape of Plateau north senatorial district and will have a ripple effect within the state at large.
He went a step further to demonstrate practically by organizing and hosting the first-ever Plateau north peace, unity and reconciliation football tournament that helped in bringing his constituents in 73 wards together. He has always been vocal about peace, as a peace ambassador himself, he has demonstrated leadership by example. He has also engaged directly with stakeholders and communities in a quest to reconcile different parties whilst fulfilling his manifesto promise.

Empowerment
Sen ID Gyang has adopted the pattern of not only giving his constituents fish but also teaching them how to catch it.
The Senator organized a one-day solar power training for over 400 constituents in his Senatorial district and supported them with N30,000 financial assistance each for all the participants of the training. He said at the event that he would not allow poverty and darkness to overwhelm the people he represents. He further explained that the training would be undertaken by the National Centre for Hydropower Research and Development Energy Commission of Nigeria to train the youths on repairs and maintenance of Solar Power light which is being installed to fight insecurity in rural communities.
He has also distributed Grinding and Sewing machines to 120 Women and other Constituents in Plateau North Senatorial District as a deliberate step to engage the women in meaningful and viable economic activity thereby expanding their capacity to generate household income.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, Sen ID Gyang made provisions for palliatives which was distributed across the 6 LGAs he represents.
Also in June 2020, ten tricycles were distributed across 6 LGAs in Plateau north senatorial district to aid the movement of goods and services thereby enhancing economical activities.
As a man who believes in the youths and has a knowledge of agriculture and its importance to national development, Sen ID Gyang sponsored the training of 615 youths from 73 electoral wards in 6 LGAs of Plateau North Senatorial District on postseason farming and agro produce marketing skills. These skills he said will be useful to them and transform their mindset about commercial agriculture.
Just recently, about 511 widows and 609 students benefited from the empowerment programme of Sen ID Gyang.
The empowerment programme was all-inclusive as the 6 LGAs were captured in it.
The programme was held at Mees Palace, Rayfield in Jos where each widow got N20,000 while students got N10,000 respectively.
Speaking to Journalists on the motivation behind the programme, Sen ID Gyang noted that empowerment and assistance of constituents remain his topmost priority.
On why the choice of widows and students was prioritized, he made it known that “the assistance and empowerment of our constituents our major priority. This category is a special category. A widow is a special group knowing that our mother’s face and orphans following the demise of parents and the difficulties they face and the challenges of the students is what has prompted this intervention.
He has been involved in employment generation for his constituents in MDAs of the Federal government and recruitment into the Police, Armed Forces and Para Military Agencies. He has facilitated over 60 gainful employments in CBN, NNPC, National Hospital, Ministries and Departments.
In what could be termed continuous performance, the construction of two rural markets of over 90 shops each at Hoss and Ganawuri in Riyom LGA is one of the moves towards teaching his constituents how to catch fish in a conducive environment. Another rural market is to be built at Vwang Jos South LGA and has been captured in the 2021 budget that has just been signed by the President.
All of these gestures will have a positive effect on the lives of the beneficiaries and by extension boost the economy of the local and state governments, thereby increasing the internally generated revenue.

Without a doubt, there is room for more work to be done, which is why it is pertinent that Plateau North constituents across all political extractions mobilize and support Sen ID Gyang in the upcoming 2023 General Elections for another 4 years of trailblazing representation.

PROF. CJ DAKAS VISITS APC STATE SECRETARIAT

-Extolled the leadership of the party,

-Praised Governor Lalong's Developmental strides,

-Urges Plateau people to preach peace

By Walbe Orgak

Professor CJ Dakas on Wednesday, 22 December 2021 in the company of his wife led supporters, friends, and well-wishers to the Plateau State All Progressives Congress Secretariat to congratulate the APC chairman and his EXCO over their victory at the last congresses.

DAKAS said the new leadership is on the threshold of breaking the jinx of returning the APC government to power in 2023.

He said the administration of Governor Simon Bako Lalong is on the verge of making history by producing his successor.

Dakas charged the new Exco to work assiduously towards the unity of the party, saying the APC Chairman's track record of bridge-building is legendary, therefore; the APC is on the right track of achieving greatness and success in all the elections to come.

The APC chieftain said it is the duty of all the EXCO and party faithful to support the government of Simon Bako Lalong to succeed.

The gubernatorial hopeful said ‘"may I seize this opportunity to congratulate His Excellency Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong for the strides he has so far accomplished in the course of his tenure’; he said three things that have just taken place in the last three weeks are heartwarming:-

First, the Lalong administration has won the opened government partnership awards. This is an international award that celebrates transparency and accountability in governance, and Plateau state came first in Africa. This shows that Plateau state is excelling at an international level.

Secondly, within the week the Plateau state government signed a memorandum of understanding in collaboration with the Nigerian Shippers council on putting the Jos Inland Port to proper use for the good of the people adding that the Jos Inland Port is the best in the country.

Thirdly, within the last week, the Hon Commissioner of the Ministry of works announced the government's decision to construct an interchange (Flyover) within the British-America Junction.

Dakas said another exciting event that occurred within the last one week was the announcement that in 2022 Shoprite is coming to open a franchise in Jos describing it as very cheering news.

He noted, all these indicate that Governor Simon Lalong is creating a conducive environment for foreign investments to thrive and urged the party leadership to work towards having the right choices of flag bearers that are competent, have integrity, God-fearing, just, peace-loving, and team players. They must work towards getting a flag bearer that holds demonstrable records of managing our diversity, he added.

Dakas said "Plateau state is a miniature Nigeria; a rainbow state and we have a responsibility to make sure that we manage our diversity in a manner that is constructive and engenders peace on the Plateau and to do so we have to make sure that the person who aspires to govern our state is not an ethnic chauvinist and a religious bigot.

He said any person who wants to govern Plateau State must demonstrate that at the heart of his desire is the Plateau Agenda not religious or ethnic agenda.

Dakas stressed that he was not in the party secretariat to declare his intention to contest for an office, but the day is coming that he will come and make a formal declaration and the unveiling of manifesto for the race of the governorship of Plateau State. On that day he said Plateau state will shake for the good.

He said he has had the privilege of serving the APC in different capacities not just at the local level, but up to the national level and he is a member of the APC constitutional review committee.

Prof Dakas made a donation of One million Naira to the party as he assured the chairman of his continued service to the party faithfully and with a passion.

Wife of the Governorship hopeful, Beatrice Dakas who accompanied her husband greeted the Party EXCO as she expressed her delight with the role of the women leaders in the party and prayed that God will help them to succeed.

Responding, Chairman of the APC in Plateau State, Hon Rufus Bature extolled the virtues of CJ Daka, saying he is endowed with all the attributes of a good leader.

Bature appreciated him for identifying with the leadership of the party, saying they came in as leaders of APC not because they wanted to be elected, but they want to serve the Plateau people and assured the party faithful’s that his EXCO will not only be fair but will be just to everybody.

He said they will create a level playing ground for every member of the party who is aspiring; noting that they will make sure whoever emerges as a candidate is the choice of the people and urged followers to support their candidates faithfully and committedly.

He added that Plateau state is bigger than one person as such all must do away with religious and ethnic politicking’, noting that one of the banes of Plateau state is lack of continuity in governance and concluded that with the support of the party faithful’s that jinx will be broken.
