2027: Plateau’s Gathering Political Storm

(By WALBE ORGAK)

As Nigeria marches steadily toward the 2027 general elections, Plateau State has emerged as one of the country’s most politically charged and strategically significant battlegrounds. Beneath the surface calm lies a fierce contest between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) — a contest that promises to redefine Plateau’s political trajectory and possibly influence the national narrative.

At the heart of the unfolding developments is Governor Caleb Mutfwang, whose leadership of the PDP has emphasized unity, stability, and renewed organizational discipline. Following a smooth and peaceful state congress, Mutfwang lauded the party’s cohesion, declaring that the PDP has demonstrated “loyalty and the ability to work together as one family.”

Adding further strength to the PDP’s camp is the recent election and growing acceptability of Chief Raymond Dabo, widely regarded as a political wizard and master strategist. Dabo’s deep grassroots connections, strategic insight, and reputation for political dexterity are expected to inject fresh energy and direction into the party’s statewide operations, giving the PDP a solid footing ahead of 2027.

However, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is equally on the offensive — and with a renewed sense of purpose. Under the leadership of Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, the APC has intensified its grassroots mobilization efforts, rolling out welfare initiatives, empowerment drives, and medical outreach programs designed to reconnect with the Grassroots and regain political trust.

The party’s resurgence has been further strengthened by the appointment of a minister from one of Plateau’s minority tribes, a move seen by analysts as a masterstroke aimed at enhancing inclusivity and consolidating support across diverse ethnic blocs. This strategic representation has significantly boosted the APC’s standing, positioning it as a formidable political force capable of challenging the PDP’s dominance.

Moreover, the APC’s strength on the Plateau is reinforced by the influence and popularity of key political figures such as Rt. Hon. Yusuf Gagdi and Hon. Alphonsus Komsol, both of whom have earned widespread recognition for their performance as House of Representatives members and grassroots appeal. Their involvement has deepened the party’s reach across communities, energizing the APC’s campaign structure and rallying younger voters to its cause.

With barely a year to the presidential elections, the national political scene is equally shaping Plateau’s dynamics. While the APC is already strategizing for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the PDP appears to be still searching for a unifying presidential candidate capable of commanding broad national support — a contrast that could influence voter sentiment at the state level.

Analysts note that Plateau’s complex ethnic and religious composition, coupled with recent defections in both major parties, makes every vote count and every alliance matter. The PDP’s key challenge will be maintaining its newfound cohesion and leveraging the strategic minds within its ranks, while the APC must translate its grassroots momentum and high-profile alliances into actual electoral success.

As the race toward 2027 intensifies, one thing is increasingly clear — the Plateau political storm is no longer on the horizon; it is gathering force. The outcome will test not just party structures but the resilience, strategy, and vision of the state’s political actors in shaping Plateau’s future.

Dakas’ PDP Chairmanship Bid Excites Party Loyalists and Opposition Alike

(By WALBE OGAK )
The political atmosphere in Plateau State is charged with renewed optimism following the declaration of Hon. Theophilus Dakas for the position of State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His entry into the race has been described by both party loyalists and political observers as a potential game-changer capable of uniting the party and restoring its lost glory.

Hon. Dakas, a seasoned politician and long-time stalwart of the PDP, is widely respected for his calm disposition, strategic thinking, and ability to build bridges across divides. Over the years, he has remained a strong pillar of support for the party, especially during periods of internal strife and leadership crises that threatened its cohesion.

Party stakeholders recall that during some of the most turbulent moments in the PDP’s history in Plateau State, Dakas played a key role in reconciling aggrieved members and fostering dialogue among opposing factions. His leadership style, they say, is defined by patience, inclusiveness, and an unwavering commitment to the ideals of democracy.

Some political observers believe that with Hon. Theophilus Dakas as the state party chairman, the PDP will finally be able to resolve most of its lingering internal crises. These include the mass exodus and defection of members to other political parties, particularly the All Progressives Congress (APC), which has over time weakened the PDP’s grassroots structures across the state.

Many within the PDP see his candidature as an opportunity for rebirth — a chance to reposition the party for electoral victory ahead of future polls. His reputation as a unifier and consensus builder, they argue, will be instrumental in mending old wounds and strengthening the confidence of members who had lost faith in the system.

Political analysts also note that Dakas’s emergence could change the tone of Plateau’s political discourse. His approach to leadership is seen as issue-driven, focusing more on governance, policy direction, and development-oriented politics rather than personal interests or internal rivalries.

For the opposition, his entry into the race has generated considerable interest. Many see him as someone capable of reviving the PDP’s competitive strength, which would make the political contest in the state more robust and engaging.

As consultations continue and party congresses draw near, Hon. Theophilus Dakas’s aspiration continues to gather momentum among various support groups, youth organizations, and elders of the party. There is a growing belief that his leadership could mark a new beginning for the PDP in Plateau State — one that emphasizes reconciliation, unity, and the collective progress of all members.

If the optimism surrounding his candidature is anything to go by, the Plateau PDP may soon witness a new era of stability and renewed strength under a chairman who has proven to be both a strategist and a unifier.
