GOVERNOR LALONG PRAISES SMOOTH CONDUCT OF APC WARD CONGRESSES IN PLATEAU

Governor Simon Bako Lalong has commended members of the All Progressives Congress in Plateau State for their peaceful conduct and maturity during the Ward Congresses of the party's held throughout the State.

Governor Lalong who went round some wards in Jos North Local Government alongside the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Idris Wase, Minister of Women Affairs Dame Pauline Tallen, Secretary to the Government of the State Prof. Danladi Abok Atu, State Party officials and other political leaders, witnessed a peaceful exercise.

The Governor's first point of visit was the Gangagare Ward where the elections were conducted through consensus and officials emerged by affirmation.

A similar scenario played out at the Ibrahim Katsina and Jos Jarawa Wards where the exercise also went smoothly without any rancour.

At each of the Wards, the elected party officials  pledged to work hard for the unity, progress and peace of the party, making sure that it does not only win elections, but provide quality leadership for the people. They affirmed their loyalty to all hierarchy of the party and to Governor Lalong as the leader of the party in the State.

Governor Lalong in a remark said he was delighted with the reports emanating from the 17 Local Government Areas of the State where the ward congress elections were conducted peacefully.

He said the fact that most wards reached consensus to elect their leaders showed that there is maturity, tolerance and understanding amongst members of the party irrespective of the various interests prevailing.

Lalong said the exemplary conduct of the APC members is a pointer to the fact that the party remains strong and will continue to wax stronger and also maintain its dominance of the political environment in Plateau State. He said it will ensure that the fortunes of the party continue to soar higher in forthcoming elections.

Deputy Speaker House of Representatives Idris Wase praised the leadership Governor who has brought the party together by insisting on fairness, justice and inclusivity. He urged the party members to rally round and take the party to the next level.

For those that might have any grievances, the Governor assured them that in the spirit of reconciliation and harmony, their concerns will be addressed through the party's internal mechanisms.

THE EXIT OF A RARE PROFESSIONAL: A TRIBUTE IN HONOUR OF LATE SUNNY AMONE AJILA

It was about 3.50 on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 when the news of the demise of Sunny Amone Ajila alias Pape filtered in. I had Gone to their office to fraternise with the people I have come to cherish as resourceful friends whose company leaves no room boredom. A very lively office where sound political debates; the humility of the elderly and loyalty of the young ones is exceptionally next to none!
While there, one of the deceased's office colleagues, Mr Andrew Subara whispered to me in Ngas dialect, 'gofa ki met', meaning, your man is gone. I asked who? Sunny, he interjected!

The atmosphere was  ceased. The was absolutely silence in the office for some good seconds. A true friend has kicked the bucket, the call of nature, a debt every mortal must pay one day!
Really, many have passed on (died) but no one gets to learn and master the dribbling tactics of the timing of death: when it will come and how!

I'm yet to come to terms with the reality of Sunny's death; not that he will not quit as he did but the suddenness. It looks so unreal but so real too. His office colleagues have been to the family house twice so there is no living in denial, Sunny is gone!

I was tempted, in my wildest imagination to think Pape hid his agonising exit from me because he knew I will certainly ask Nature why but on a second thought I asked myself, did Sunny even know he will die before he breath his last? And the answer came, Unlikely!

My random thoughts were not out of place. They just normal traces of the confusing reactions that usually following the breaking news of the death of a friend, relative and/or neighbours.

Sunny was a gifted hand, a secretarial wizard. Those us who have benefitted from his typing and editorial exploits will attest that the deceased' prowess on the computer was a great sight to behold. His typing skills, the art he knows better, lived and died doing was so legendary. When the news of his demise broke, many who came around to ascertain the news at his duty post, bore witness to this reality, repeatedly!

The man has quitely exited, leaving a professional gab that will be hard to fill in a hurry. Pape, who will type our manuscripts, memoirs, stories and edit them nicely and speedy in the you were doing? Who will do the excellent transcribing of news report for journalists as you always do?

Sunny's death could be likened to the burning of a compendium, full of  virtues in humbleness, kindness and peace, but thank God virtues never dies. His demise has forcefully robbed us of his professional touch, but thank God legacies never die!

Pape, you are gone but yet here with us. 'Death is no death, but a means for to live, do not dispair: of no worldly tyrant be thou in dread,
Thy compass, which is God's world, shall thee lead,
And the wind is fair.' This peotry is for you.

You have have crossed over to the other side of life but your sweet memories are with us, the shall ever remained ever green, in our loving embrace.

May the comforting power of God dwells richly with your family even as I beat you good bye, my great benefactor, Chief Sunny Amone Ajila, Great son of Plateau with Delta roots!

You were indeed a man with many parts,  and so against the temptation of opening new paragraphs, let me end by saying you were an asset to humanity, and certainly not a liability. Between July 1955 when you arrived this world and July 27, 2021 when you breathed your last, you've paid you dues in the world of work and it is time to rest. Rest on, Rest In Peace!

INDEED, CHIEF SOLOMON. D. LAR LEAVES BEHIND A SUCCESSFUL LEGACY FOR GENERATIONS TO COME

BY J. T. AKANS, KSM FICA, JP

It is said that legacy is passed from one generation to the next and this often refers to gifts, wisdom and vision.

No doubt Chief Solomon Daushep Lar leaves behind incredible legacies that live on in the hearts of

Nigerian people, today Baba Lar is no longer with us physically, but his principles, philosophies, achievement and his acts of kindness, done without expectation of reward or recognition are immortal and has a special place in people’s heart and will be spreading from generation to generation.

The Bible tells us in Proverbs 13:22" A good man leaves an inheritance to his children, but sinners wealth is stored up for the righteous this verse keeps our life goals on vision and legacy front.

Today in continuation of Baba's legacy those of us who share in the vision of Chief S D Lar will agree with me that Solomon Lar's philosophy was to make his people self-reliant,

Baba's self-reliance was portrayed in his quest, vision and determination to free his people and give them economic, political and cultural power " A self-reliant person does not exploit other people and at the same time they are not exploitable"

Indeed, this was the philosophy of our father mentor and the emancipator, a politician who has held various political offices in Nigeria for over 50 years successfully.

To keep on and in continuation of these incredible legacies, Baba's daughter, Hon Beni Butmak Lar is like a father like a daughter. Hon Beni Lar a politician of the People’s Democratic party a current ranking serving member of the house of Representatives, representing Lantang north and south recently unveiled her basic concept on the provision of support for her people by organizing her yearly constituency briefing and economic empowerment.

The 2021 constituency briefing and economic empowerment of women and youths, widows, religious and traditional leaders took place in Lantang north and south on the 23rd and 24th day of July 2021 with Prof Elias Nankap Lamle of the centre for conflict management and peace studies University of Jos who made a paper presentation, THE ROLE OF THE LEGISLATORS AND THE ROLE OF EXECUTIVE IN A DEMOCRATIC SETTING

Indeed, Beni's constituency briefing and economic empowerment are anchored on a deliberate program that promotes investment and financial instruments that target millions of unemployed people, hustler enterprises, and farmers to be self-reliant.

Her election into the house of representative has completely changed the conversation and fortune of the good people of plateau, particularly Lantang north and south,

No Wonder the people have signed, sealed and delivered a new slogan ONLY BENI CAN DEFEAT BENI

PLATEAU EMBARKS ON MASSIVE REVENUE DRIVE AS GOVERNOR LALONG PAYS GROUND RENT TO FLAG OFF EXERCISE

Weeks after signing the newly passed Revenue Law and Property and Land Use Charge Law as well as the Plateau Geographic Information Systems Law, Governor Simon Bako Lalong has flagged off a high powered revenue drive with a target to raise the monthly revenue base of the State to about 3 to 5 billion monthly.

While flagging off the exercise at the Plateau State Internal Revenue Service Headquarters in Jos, the Governor Lalong said the revenue drive is aimed at changing the income of the State to pave way for funding more projects and programmes which are hampered currently because of lack of funds.
Lalong who paid the ground rent charges for his personal property, said he decided to lead by example in order to demonstrate to the citizens that nobody is above the law or will be left out in the process.
He said " I am not asking the citizens to do as I SAY, but to do as I DO.  I am not only the Governor, but also Chairman of the Plateau State Revenue Council as stipulated by law. Like the saying goes, leaders lead from the front. Having personally demonstrated this level of civic responsibility as the number one citizen of the State, it means that there is nobody that will default. All of us are subject to the law and those who run against the law will bear the consequences. I therefore expect all citizens particularly political leaders (both elected and appointed) to line up behind me and do same. The time to show leadership has come".
The Governor said he will not intervene on behalf of any tax defaulter " I plead with every citizen particularly the “big men” to comply because I will not entertain anyone begging me to intervene when the law catches up with you. This is not about me or anyone, but about the law. It is because I do not want to beg anybody or be embarrassed that I am paying my own today" he said.

He explained that he recently signed into law the Plateau State Revenue (Consolidation) Law; Plateau Property and Land Use Charge Law; Plateau Geographic Information Services Law amongst others aimed at giving legal backing to all revenue generating activities and improving the tax environment.

The Governor however warned against default as very soon, those wishing to access some services of the Plateau State Government shall be required to show evidence of payment of their taxes. This is very important because we cannot enjoy and claim rights and benefits without corresponding responsibility.

Executive Chairman of the PSIRS Dashe reaffirmed that the exercise which involves taxpayer sensitization; awareness creation; on-the-spot inspection of registration licenses and permits; is a continuous one that will be sustained. He called on all stakeholders to fulfill their civic responsibility of voluntarily paying all taxes, levies, fees and fines to grow our IGR.
According to him, after the period of sensitization and persuasion elapses, the Government shall begin enforcement and whoever fails to comply, will face the law.

After symbolic payment of his ground rent, the Governor and other top government officials paid visits to some business premises to sensitise them and seek their cooperation in the high powered revenue drive. These include First Bank, UBA and Onigbinde Stores all on the Ahmadu Bello Way Terminus. The organisations assured the Governor that they will do their best to ensure that the revenue drive succeeds.

PLATEAU GOVERNOR VISITS RURAL ELECTRIFICATION AGENCY, CANVASSES LIGHTING MORE COMMUNITIES

Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong has advocated for the lighting of more rural communities in the State through the deployment of Solar Mini Grid system.

Governor Lalong who visited the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in Abuja to meet with the Managing Director Engr. Ahmad Salihijo and his management team, commended the Agency for carrying out the 234 KWp Shemankar solar mini grid that has become a successful venture lighting up communities and improving the lives of the people.

He said his visit to the REA was to make another passionate appeal for a Solar Mini-Grid Deployment to Ajikamai, the community hosting the newly established Federal Polytechnic N’yak, Shendam LGA of Plateau State. According to him, as the new Polytechnic takes off, power is a major challenge because currently, the area is not connected to the national grid.

While appealing for urgent intervention, he said "Specifically, we shall appreciate if the REA program through the World Bank/Central Bank CARES initiative can be extended to the newly established Plateau State Energy Corporation as a means to enable the State government’s desire to deliver power to the Polytechnic and surrounding communities through the off-grid energy approach."

Lalong said Plateau State energy sector is undergoing reforms with the establishment of the Plateau State Energy Corporation which is being positioned for synergy and policy implementation. He craved the assistance of REA in equipment supply and technical capacity building for the new Corporation.

He presented other requests to the Managing Director of the REA, urging the agency to partner with the Plateau State Government in expanding NESCO’S power generation capacity both in the existing hydro or exploring other renewables.

Responding, Managing Director REA Engr. Ahmad Salihijo appreciated the Governor for the visit and assured him that the agency will be captured under various programmes that are ongoing.

He cited the interventions that will soon be done in 3 markets in Jos namely: Building Materials, Rukuba Market and Katako. Other initiatives that the State is expected to benefit from are the Solar Power Naija program which has five communities. Others already implemented are the 5KW Health Centres project in five primary healthcare centres in the State under COVID-19.

Salihijo appealed to the Governor to nominate a State focal person that will liaise with the REA in carrying out some of the requests presented to the agency.

Haruna Dabin and 11 had been arrested and Arraigned in the Area Court Amper for the destruction of farms produces worth thousands of naira.

By Johnson Paul
Former Plateau State PDP state Chairman and one-time gubernatorial candidate Haruna Dabin and 11 other persons were arrested and arraigned before the Magistrate Court Amper for Criminal Mischief and conspiracy.

Dabin was arrested when he led 11 other persons to mowed down the cultivated farms in his village home town Kalashi in Amper District Kanke Local Government Area of Plateau State due to an age-long family land dispute.

Amongst the crops destroyed were soya beans, maize and millet which are set to be valued at about nine hundred thousand nairas.

Speaking to the media the farmers lamented that this is their only source of livelihood, now they don’t know where to turn to.

The destruction of these crops raises a lot of questions because it happened at a time when a lot of farmlands are been destroyed by unknown men and the tension generated is capable of a breach of peace not only in the state but the country at-large.

In the last month, maize, soya beans, potatoes, peppers and other crops cultivated on various hectares of farmlands have been destroyed in many communities in Riyom, Barkin Ladi, Jos South, and Bassa local government areas of the State, causing farmers losses running into millions of Naira.

This is the latest incident that was discovered and the perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted.

Governor Lalong who was appalled described as callous, criminal, inhuman and wicked, the reported willful destruction of farm crops in some communities in the State by yet to be apprehended criminals.

Governor Lalong while reacting to the ugly development said it is unimaginable that people will go into a farm and mow down flourishing crops that are nearing maturity and expected to be harvested in the coming weeks and months for whatever reason. This according to him is a premeditated act that must be addressed.

Lalong said “the recent case of such intentional decimation of farm crops in Kpachudu, Jebbu Miango in Bassa Local Government Area is condemnable and unacceptable. From the reports, this is a carefully planned and executed act that is not only meant to provoke crisis, suspicion and instability in the area, but also render the victims poor and hungry. What these criminals fail to understand is that such actions will eventually leave the entire State and the country with food shortages where even the perpetrators will not escape”.

PARTING TRIBUTE TO A CARING PATRIOT: LATE BABA ARCH. DASPAN ISHAYA THOMAS

It took me days to put pen to paper when I got the news of the sudden demise of Late Baba Arch. Daspan Ishaya Thomas, my neighbour.

I was just returning from one of my evening outings when I met a woman and a man discussing the shocking incident. After much lamentations, the duo recounted his good works which climaxed with his love for mankind and dedication to the service of God!

Long before now, a friend once told me about how great Baba was in the eyes of his people back home. Great at home, great in the diaspora as I learnt he once presented himself for the presidency of Nigeria. So willing to serve was this great man of virtue.

Even as an architect, the Late Baba strived to make a mark in the field of law. He was one of the few Nigerians, death or alive, who could represent himself or anyone in any court in the land and win a legal battle. He was trained architect but lived excellent 'Lawyer'' life. The simplest explanation in my modest estimation is imbedded in the magic wand of passion and experience!

Baba Daspan took personal interest and invested his all to fight the course of justice for the defenseless. He practically did that when one Danjuma, a Ngas chap had a terrible encounter with PW LTD, a popular Construction company in the Country. On that fateful day, the chap had a professional accident while working at one of the company's construction sites, an overhead bridge which was just by Late Baba's residence.

Curiously, the construction company denied responsibility for the treatment and compensation of this visible dedicated staff, claiming the victim was not their staff and Baba voluntarily picked up the case against the company. It was meant to be purely a humanitarian service because the victim who narrowly escaped death had no visible means of hiring and  paying for any legal service(s).

Late Baba Daspan had a borehole in his house which became the only nearest and reliable source of drinkable in our neighbourhood. One striking act generosity of Baba, a rare breed per excellence was that he has a borehole where people, neighbours and strangers frequented 24 hours during dry season but the deceased will not complaint. Even when it broke down; Baba Daspan will repair it without demanding any explanation as to who was responsible for the breakdown. That was who this man was and this credible witness is on the lips of toddlers, our children who always go to his hospitality house to fetch water.

Baba Architect was indeed a community leader, a well-respected moral conscience of the neighbourhood. He was a philanthropist, a very humble father and father figure whose only interest is to make life more just, equitable and convenient for all.

The Daspan family were through great agony and travails occasioned by horrifying activities of kidnappers but because of Baba's faith in God, he lived as though nothing happened. Always very free faced and calculative!

Through Baba I have learnt the true meaning of kindness. I have also learnt power of courage and faith in God as antidotes for worrying problems. His life again taught me that professional training does not make a man a professional but passion. With passion the world could make medical doctors out of trained engineers or accountants out of historians. Passion sustained by experience could make all the difference!

When positive passion is on the driver's seat of a man's life, success is sure. That is the main thesis of Baba's mysterious breakthrough in a field not his own.

Road crashes is one of the worst death traps in Nigeria but for how long. It has forcefully snatched on of our finest brands but we do not even have the capacity to ask why.

Anyway, Late Baba Daspan has paid his dues in the land of the living and we can only say Rest in Peace at the others side. Finally, let me sincerely say take heard to the immediate family, our neighbourhood; community, Mangu LGC; Plateau State and Nigeria. The deceased is out of sight to be with the Lord, his Maker but his legacies shall never fade in our dearest memories.

Should this tribute get to you in the great beyond, you might not really know who the author truly is, though a neighbour but Caring patriot, I actually wished I were a poet to curve better lines or a songbird to sing your praise even in death!
