A WORD OF CAUTION TO POLITICAL POWER BROKERS IN PLATEAU STATE When it comes to general elections, Plateau people know what to do. Because primary elections are controlled processes, anybody could monitise and manipulate the delegates to install whoever he/she pleases as candidate (s) but, ultimately, the citizens will decide who carries the day at the secondary poll and Plateau electorates hardly missed out on that. Therefore, power brokers, in the state, are cautioned to take caution from the lessons of history. No sitting Governor has ever produced his successor in Plateau State. This is so not because this feat is an impossibility but failure of imposition. This should not be in view of the benefits of genuine continuity. Imposition breeds wild political intolerance and hatred which could lead to impulsive protest voting that may result in the emergence of unprepared elements in the corridors of power. Hence, bad leadership with nothing to offer the state. Let us break the circle of bad leadership. “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it”, said Winston Churchill. DARIYE'S RETURN AND THE FUTURE OF POLITICS IN THE PLATEAU

(Modest Thoughts with Ayuba Yilgak'ha, April 27, 2022; SMS: 08116181263)

DARIYE'S RETURN AND THE FUTURE OF POLITICS IN THE PLATEAU

On April 14, 2022, in the evening, news filtered into town that two terms Ex-governor, Chief Joshua Chibi Dariye has been granted a presidential pardon by the Council of State which is an advisory body to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The news reports were initially scanty until I read the Press Release made by Plateau Youth Council (PYC). From largely unreliable Social Media reports, conventional Media platforms later carried the news and this established the authenticity of the State pardons.

The details of the report indicated that out of 162 applications presented before the Council of State, 159 were confirmed and approved with the Ex-governor and his Taraba colleague, Rev. Jolly name who was serving a 12-year jail term on the favoured list.

The mood in Plateau State was largely that of jubilation, but not without reservations from perceived political opponents. Since the news broke, no official statement had come either from Dariye himself, his aides, or the family. However, the Pardon of Sen. Dariye is a reality that has come to stay and this is cheering news to family, friends, and political associates.

Which way anybody can look at it, Distinguished Sen. Chief JC Dariye is a force in plateau politics. Since this son of the state, popularly called Khawun Mushere, gave a shot at the governorship seat of the state in 1996 under the platform of the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP), his name has continued to ring a bell in the political firmament of the state and, by extension, Nigeria.

He won and become Governor-elect under the UNCP but the coming of the Abacha's military regime scuttled the consummation of the democratic transition program in the country and Plateau State. Dariye was later re-elected governor of the state and was sworn in as Governor of Plateau State on May 29, 1999. In 2003, he won a second tenure, which lasted till 2007 with so many obstructions and difficulties.

Chief Dariye's political sagacity earned him the nickname, "Head boy of Plateau Politics!" Even after going through the treacherous experience of his illegal impeachment and the suspension of political structures under the guise of emergency rule, the former governor eventually ended his tenure and later became two terms Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing the good people of Plateau Central Senatorial District.

I stumbled on His Excellency, Chief. Dariye was a political enigma in 2007 when he featured at the grand finale of the campaign of the then, little known political toddler, Major Satty Davis Gogwim (rtd) who eventually defeated the then Deputy Senate President, Ibrahim Nasiru Mantu of blessed to be a Senator of the federal republic of Nigeria. Mantu was, at the time, a very influential political colossus, but Dariye's input amongst others greatly contributed to the victory of the former.

Let me recount here that at the rally at Pankshin, I stood close to an old man whom, I guess, came from kanam. This grey-haired man, overwhelmed by the thunderous applause Dariye received when he stood up to address the mammoth crowd that graced the rally, broke into tears as he said in Hausa, "Mutane biyu din nan ne party a Plato, amma damuwa ya Shiga sakaninsu" which translated in English means, These  two men

- referring to Ex-governor Dariye and Late Sen. Mantu who were formerly best political friends, but later fell out with each other and become strange bedfellows. Emotion failed the Kanam man (if I got it right) over Dariye's intimidating political cloud.

Indeed, Sen. Dariye is an index of a fine political juggernaut. His sense of empathy is second to none. Khawun Mushere is a very generous man and his open-armed disposition has put smiles on the faces of many in the state. Dariye knows how to time his political moves and his presence at public functions always creates a lasting impression in the minds of people. I will sample at least three occasions to buttress this point.

First, was a story my father told me about one of the rallies he attended at the Rwang Pam Township Stadium in Jos. My dad state said while they were on their way to Jos, some of their co-travelers were complaining about Dariye's leadership style. However, when the then Governor arrived at the venue, the stadium was entirely thrown into wild jubilation and even those that were complaining could not hide their joy but railroaded into dancing and celebrating this magnetic governor. That is Dariye for you!

Again a man shared an experience he witnessed at the Federal Secretariat Jos with me. He said, Dariye used to be a subject of complaint in their office, but one day the governor visited their office and gave them a huge sum of money that made them overwhelmed with joy. After the visit, the "Head boy" became the toast of the office and the former accusers could engage in a physical fight with anybody in defense of chief Dariye. The Point is that Dariye has what it takes to turn a political enemy into a political friend and that is the hallmark of a seasoned politician!

The third experience I witnessed myself was at the Church of Christ in Nations (RCC) Kabwir, Kanke Local government. It was a retirement/inauguration service that Governor Dariye attended. While giving his Goodwill message, the governor donated a car to the retiring Reverend to the utter surprise of the audience. The retiring celebrant, Rev. Siman Komye could not hide his joy, and some of us whom the Reverend had pastored returned home with exceeding joy.  These experiences have been just specimens of several other experiences many had with the man at different places.

Dariye has been a great benefactor to many people out there. However, the man had gone through daunting challenges in life. He has suffered betrayals of all sorts from political associates and friends; suffered unbearable treatments, even from his kinsmen. For instance, the impeachment and state of emergency Dariye's regime suffered were largely plotted by political associates whom he has sacrificed a lot for.

Dariye's father was abducted twice and was eventually killed by blood-thirsty criminals who perpetrated the heinous act in active collaboration with his kinsmen. However, not deterred by the tendencies of ingrates, the man has continued to make history in philanthropic gestures. He is still a kind man with a forgiving heart.

Let it be categorically stated here that Sen. Dariye is not perfect. There is nothing to suggest that he is in error prove. Part of Dariye's shortcomings manifested when he was charged with corruption cases, found guilty, and convicted to serve a 10-year jail term by the supreme court of Nigeria. Being infallible, he offended the state and possibly individuals, that is human.  We, all, have defaulted in our ways too. Thank God, Dariye has been granted a state pardon. Perhaps, the best news for Dariye's family, political associates, and well-wishers in the year 2022 came from a liberating state pardon!

When Dariye's freedom was announced most of the reactions I got on the Social Media and even verbally, indicated that the man's freedom will change the political chemistry and permutations of the state, especially, as it affects the 2023 poll. How this insinuation plays out is a matter of conjecture which is hanging in the womb of time. Whatever it is, Dariye's freedom, I guess, is the most important for him and his family. It takes freedom to make a difference in the land of the living.

The implications of the state pardon, from the point of law, is that the sins Sen. Dariye committed against the state have been forgiven. He can express and confidently aspire to occupy the highest office in the land if he so wishes. Therefore, what is left for him is to pick the pieces of his life and face the task ahead.

Nobody knows what Dariye's plans are but one thing is certain, his presence alone could shape the political permutations and combinations of Plateau State. The Headboy is still active and I do not think he will stand aloof to the political happenings in the State and Nigeria. Because he is involved, he will be involved. Politicians do not quit, they only fade away and I do not think Dariye has faded away as far as politics is concerned.

The prevailing anxiety everywhere in Plateau State is the question of who will be the next Governor of the state? Can the incumbent Governor, Lalong breaks the jinx and single-handedly install his successor, or needs the input from the likes of political heavyweights Dariye? Should these two men fall apart, what will happen? Is the state expecting a surprise? Who knows, time shall tell. What is known is that politics is a game of corporate relevance that is perfected through alignments and realignments of forces. If the political forces in Plateau State failed to align properly, the next Governor in the state might emerge through protest votes!

He who fights alone dies alone and especially so in the game of politics. When Dariye and Mantu fell apart, a Jang emerged; should Lalong and Dariye fall apart, it will be politically risky for both men. The Jang - Jeremiah groups have to put their house to give a good fight. Do not underestimate the role of the number sixth citizen in Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Idris Maje; Hon. Minister Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Kedem Tallen OFR, and other critical stakeholders will play. Their roles could make a difference, especially, when a majority of them come with one voice. Time shall, also, tell.

If I were to advise, however, I will challenge Sen. Dariye to use his political experience and cloud to mentor young politicians in the art of development politics. He has seen it all, so, the task of providing credible political leadership, especially in the state is what is remaining. The Head boy has all that it takes to step into the oversized shoes left by the duo of elder statesmen like JD Gomwalk and Baba Solomon Daushep Lar, the Emancipator of blessed memory. Baba Jang would have been but squandered the opportunity on the altar of tribal politics. I hope Dariye will take caution to avoid the booby trap that could cause his chances.

If Dariye fails, an opportunity has come for another plateau son to take over. Rt. Hon. Barr. Simon Bako Lalong, the current governor has ample opportunity to give a shot at becoming the myth of the state's politics but it depends on how he ends his tenure. Welcome home your excellency, Sen. JC Dariye, "Ikon Allah", the political cat with nine lives!

LEADERS AS CATALYST FOR DEVELOPMENT

LEADERS AS CATALYST FOR DEVELOPMENT

*(Modest Thoughts with Ayuba Yilgak'ha, April 26, 2022)*

Development has to do with procedural and structural transformation of a community, state or nation state through the application of human capabilities, especially, in Leadership. It is the quantitative and qualitative increase in the welfare of a state and its people.

In the 21st Century, the agenda of development as conceptualised and operationalised by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) lay emphasis on issues of rapidity, sustainability, inclusion and equity. In other words, any process of development that does not reflect these key elements is not timely and has deviated or fallen short of a postmodern development agenda.

In order to attain development trajectory that reflects the quartet elements of rapidity, sustainability, inclusiveness and equity, one of the critical conditions is to have leadership structure that is intellectually dynamics, socially progressive and technologically innovative and committed to pragmatic recreation and cultivation of new value systems which guarantee value reorientation and structural transformation. Since leadership has increasingly recognised as rallying point for generic (holistic) transformation, it is important to extensively understand leadership matrix, the length and breadth of what constitutes or makes a functional leader.

A leader is someone whom responsibility has beckoned on to mobilise, co'ordinate (organise) and lead a people. It is the responsibility of being a moral compass, light bearer, ambassador, confidant and pillar upon which the hope of people derive. Leaders are therefore standard bearers or status symbols upon which a people are measured and defined.

Leaders are mirrors through which a society is rated. In other words, a people get a leader they deserve. This is because leaders do not emerged from the moon but are samples drawn from a population they belonged. A sample is a representation of the major characteristics of the total population from where it is drawn. So, anything to the contrary is an abnormality.

In an ideal society, every member is expected to exhibit high degree of morality and character that is accepted within the framework of its ethics and laws. Therefore, leaders are expected to demonstrate these cherished codes of conduct so as to inspire and motivate their subjects, the people they lead to follow suit. For leaders to deliver on their mandate, there are certain basic attributes they need to exhibit which include but not limited to influence, integrity, courage, emotional stability, selflessness, contentment, vision, pragmatism, verse knowledge and power of speech, wide contact, etc.

A Leader is required to have the charisma to influence the direction a society should go to achieve greatness. This implies that someone who does not have the stamina to influence the direction a society takes cannot be a good leader but a bad influence on the people.

A leader is surposed to be a person of integrity. Integrity is the status of being consistent all the time. A consistent person is a one-faced person who is a constant in secret and in public. He is that individual that keeps to his promise(s) and could sacrifice his personal comfort to honour his words no matter how expensive. Integrity, is all about saying what you mean and meaning what has been said to such a level that when errors are made in speech, apologies are promptly tendered without any delay.

Courage is another character trait to look for in a leader. Courage is all about developing strong will and power to forge ahead in the face of discouragement and daunting challenges. It is positive mindset that keeps a leader going and never giving up in every giving circumstance, knowing that once he did, the people will be discouraged too and the damage might cause will be unimaginable. It is the capacity to still say 'we can' in the face of difficulties while effort are sustained in pursuit of fresh strategies to overcome outstanding problem facing the system where the leader is in charged. A leader should have the courage to promptly rebuke wrong doings without fear or favour but doing so in firm love.

A leader is someone who is emotionally stable. He is one who does not act on impulse but learned to be calmed even in the face of intense provocation. Leadership is the ability to maintain calmed nerves because anything to the contrary might set the society on fire. A leader could show sympathy and empathy but must not demonstrate that by crying in the public space. The tears of the leader could make people to lose hope in a situation.

A leader must not be selfish but seeks to promote the good of his subjects even at the risk of losing personal gain(s). Seflessness is a recipe for trust building and moral support from the people. A leader who is selfless endears himself to the people and does not need to be ashamed because his people will also sacrifice their personal comfort to encourage and support such leader.

Leaders have to be contented to enable them avoid the temptation of being corrupt. A leader should be grateful for the office he occupies and seek to create values that will make it work for the common good. Contentment is learning to live within one's means with the hope that things could go fine through the appropriation of the innate capacity of the people to labour and make the system prosper for all to benefit from.

Leadership is about the capacity of leaders to develop the capacity to curve a vision of a better tomorrow and encourage the people to work towards it. The people must be kept abraced with the contents and reality of the vision before they key into it. A vision curved for the people must be sharp and realistic.

A leader must understand the times and learned to make necessary adjustments when circumstances changed in manner that what he does reflect or meet contemporary needs. That is pragmatism. Pragmatism is all about not being dogmatic but flexible in a most positive and beneficial way. It is yielding to what works without necessarily compromising standards.

A leader has to be vast in knowledge and have the ability to communicate in clear terms all that his subjects need to know and must have to make progress. Oratory is a leadership weapon that is necessary to inspire action as at when due. For a leader to be 10 steps ahead of his people, vast knowledge and power of speech is necessary.

A leader is expected to have have wide contacts or the potentials to do so. The presence of a leader in the presence of other publics should attract attention and goodwill for his people. The leader does not have all the answers but knows the resources to mobilise or what responsibility to delegate or outsourced and to the appropriate experts to achieve results.

Leaders are ambassadors and must rise above local meddlings. They must build capacity to represent their people with distinction so that when the news got home, it will trigger high sense of pride and satisfaction in the subjects.

Geniune leaders are those that could gallantly take the bullet if that sacrifice will bring roses to their subject. Leaders are statesmen whose concerns are transgenerational, that is, striving to solve today's problems without compromising the benefits of future generation. Therefore, a true leader plans for the future by way of putting in place structures that will serve future needs even if he might not be alive to benefit from the fruits of those investments.

From the attributes discussed above, it could be seen clearly that leadership is a catalyst for social stability and development. The interplay of the character traits discussed above make leadership a critical determinants of community progress. How far a nation or state goes, therefore, rest squarely on quality of leadership. This means that leadership recruitment is one exercise that must not be taken for granted. The people must be sure the people they chose to lead them are men with requisite character to lead them or else they stand the risk of rocking the boat without remedy.

The development history of all developed and emerging economies of the world is tight to the leadership index or quotient of those countries. It takes the transgenerational leadership prowess of legends like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, JF Kennedy, etc. to change the fortune of United States of America (USA), it takes a Lee Kuan Yu to revolutionarise Singapore; Deng Xiaoping to transform China, Nelson Mandela made the needed sacrifice to end Apathied in South Africa, etc. Somebody, a legendary leader has to inspire action in people by personal, practical example to turn things around.

These are seasons of electioneering campaigns in Nigeria. Therefore, those aspiring to lead at national, states and local levels of the federal republic should as a matter of necessity cultivate those critical leadership qualities discussed if, at all, they are to effectively and efficiently confront myriad of problems facing the country, especially, complex issues of insecurity, economic downturn, structural imbalances, institutional corruption, ethnic prejudices, gender disparity, etc. Mere wishes have not and cannot help in solving deep seated problems but deliberate effort sustained by the leadership will to change the status quo.

Leadership models abound but any of such models that does not ultimately result in rapid, holistic (inclusive) and sustainable development of the community, state or nation-state is mere academic rhetoric which should be discarded with the wave of a hand. It is practical leadership or leaders whose actions that result in positive change in the physical structures and welfare of the people that matters. No more, no less.

While most politicians use most of their foot soldiers and dump them, such a political gimmick is not on the menu of Hon. Yusuf Gagdi, as none on his 2019 campaign train ever complain of betrayal by him.

Infrastructurally wise, Gagdi has constructed some roads and ICT centers. He is also constructing skills acquisition centres, and constructing palaces for some royal fathers.

He has achieved so many to his credit that time and space will not permit me to mention all.

As we present you with the Award of Invaluable Representation and Youth Empowerment, it is our earnest prayer that you don't relent, but inflame your zeal, passion, and enthusiasm in representing your constituents and bettering their welfare and also raising bills that will continue impacting positively on your Constituency, Senatorial District, Plateau State, and the entire country.

Well done and God bless!

AN APPEAL TO DVD SUPPORT GROUPS TO REMAIN CALM

AN APPEAL TO DVD SUPPORT GROUPS TO REMAIN CALM

The Media team of the DVD Movement wishes to appeal to the various support groups that have indicated readiness to obtain the APC Governorship Nomination Form  for its leader, Nde David Victor Dimka fsi to remain calm and allow him make such sacrifices on their behalf.

While acknowledging the fact that DVD Movement is a populist Campaign Organisation that is anchored on the principle of democratic participation, the Media team wishes to note that the readiness of the support groups to obtain the nomination form  on behalf of its Principal is a show of total believe in his character, personality, and capacity to lead Plateau State State.

However, the Media team said the decision by the Captain of the Movement to personally obtain his nomination form should not be seen as a move to undermine their commitment, sacrifices, tenacity and love for his aspiration.

In addition, the team urges the support groups to begin preparation towards the conduct of the forthcoming primary elections which require intense mobilization  of delegates.

The team therefore appreciates the untiring support so far demonstrated by the various support groups and assures them that DVD leadership in Plateau State come 2023 will be citizens-driven anchored on participatory governance .
