It remains questionable when a politician chooses to dwell more on criticizing an opponent rather than presenting clear ideas, policies, and a convincing vision as part of electioneering campaigns.
Both Rt. Hon. Yusufu Gagdi and Rt. Hon. Dewan have, in different capacities, contributed their quota toward representing their people to the best of their abilities. Democracy thrives better when campaigns are built on issues, performance, and constructive engagement rather than persistent attacks.
It is therefore disheartening to observe Rt. Hon. Dewan frequently resorting to media criticism and public castigation of Rt. Hon. Gagdi as a political strategy. Such an approach does not project the maturity, depth, and statesmanship expected of someone seeking to represent the people on a bigger platform.
The people deserve campaigns centered on solutions, development plans, and measurable ideas capable of advancing the constituency and improving the welfare of the masses. Excessive focus on attacking an opponent may create the impression that there is little else to offer beyond political antagonism.
Leadership is best demonstrated not through condemnation of others, but through the presentation of superior ideas, vision, and the capacity to unite the people toward common progress.
While Rt. Hon. Dewan served as former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly and undoubtedly played significant roles in the state’s legislative activities, political debates should be anchored on verifiable facts, records, and measurable performance rather than broad claims or media confrontations.
If Dewan believes he has performed better than Rt. Hon. Yusufu Gagdi, the burden rests on him to clearly present evidence of his achievements to the people. This should include detailed records of bills sponsored, motions moved, constituency projects executed, empowerment programmes carried out, and his overall legislative contributions while in office.
Rt. Hon. Yusufu Gagdi’s representation at the National Assembly has been visible through constituency interventions, infrastructural projects, youth and women empowerment initiatives, educational support programmes, and active participation in legislative activities. Therefore, any comparison should be based on concrete indices of performance and public impact.
The electorate today are more politically conscious and deserve issue-based campaigns built around facts and accountability. Rather than focusing on criticism and media attacks, politicians seeking higher office should engage the public with practical achievements, policy direction, and a clear roadmap for development.
Politics should not merely be about who speaks louder against an opponent, but who can convincingly demonstrate capacity, results, and effective representation.
