SHIKIR NUHU HAS CALLED ON SOCIO-CULTURAL GROUPS TO SUPPORT MICROFINANCE BANKS
By Walbe Orgak
Microfinance bank has over the years contributed significantly to the economic development of the country and it has helped in poverty alleviation.
it is in this light
that the Executive Secretary/CEO of the National Association of Microfinance
Banks (NAMB) Shikir Nuhu Caleb called on
socio-cultural groups like Arewa Consultative Forum and others to help salvage
the institutions from collapse most especially due to the Recapitalization
regime by Central Bank of Nigeria.
Shikir Nuhu Caleb made
the call during an emergency meeting with MDs of MFBs in Kaduna after the ACF
NEC meeting.
According to him with
support from such groups and other spirited individuals challenges confronting
the Microfinance banks can be tackled.
Shikir called on the
Igbos and the Yorubas to key into the fight to salvage the Micro Finance Banks
from collapsing, he said ‘as we are lobbying from the north with ACF and
Northern Elders Forum, the Igbos should reach out to Ohanize in the southeast
and Afenifere in the southwest to advance the course of MFBs.
He noted that with
advocacy and lobbying no challenge cannot be surmounted, ‘So we feel these socio-cultural groups are
apolitical and are not partisan, therefore, if they key into our program then
the Microfinance Banks will be strengthened to continue providing economic
empowerment to the less privilege ones hence becoming the cornerstone in the
promotion of rural transformation and poverty alleviation thereby improving
small-scale enterprises and boosting agriculture development, he added
