Microfinance Bank: Kanke LGA Begins Feasibility Studies, Financial Projections

To match words with action, the Chairman of Kanke Transition Implementation Committee, Hon. Shikir Nuhu Caleb has concluded plans to commission a feasibility studies and financial projections on the planned establishment of a Microfinance bank in the area. To this end, a non partisan expert committee compromising mostly of private sector and home base financial players will soon be inaugurated with specific terms of reference towards the actualisation of the huge project.

The Chairman kicstarted the vision during a consultation tour to some  regulators at the Central Bank of Nigeria recently.
Speaking to the media in Jos at the weekend, the Chairman highlighted the major ongoing efforts especially in the areas of feasibility study and financial projection for the sustainability of operations, Enterprise Risk Management Framework, identifying and shortlisting of some key Kanke Stakeholders for business advocacy and engagements meetings with the aim of reaching out for their buy-in. The Chairman said it is achievable and sustainable and will be very beneficial to the people.

He further stressed the plan efforts to raise capital for category of the MFB that will be suitable for operations within Kanke and it's environs to meet the kind of financial services in terms of a robust e-banking channels, Micro-insurance products & services, collections & payments of staff salaries, payment remittances, deposits and withdrawals of cash, etc.

According to him, the MFB is not in competition with any deposit money bank (DMB) but to provide financial services that will be attractive and second to none for it's teaming citizens. Further, the Local Government will contribute the seed funds with other individual(s), Cooperative Societies especially Rityil Multi-purpose Cooperative Society Ltd, Development Associations etc which he emphasis that it should be privately driven for it's continuity even after his tenure as the Council Chairman. It will be banker to the Council basic operations, he added.

Shikir said it's not likely that any DMB will be willing to open a branch in Kanke at the moment due to current business harshness, but a Tier 2 Microfinance Bank can operate comfortably to provide the financial service needs of any economically active person, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). He stated that the MFB will also create a platform for diaspora remittances for their families back home and that a Microfinance bank has a lot of potentials to meet the financial services of the people, if properly harnessed.

"In fact, the MFB will provide double bottom line which is the Social and it's profitability/sustainability components. It's a known fact, that the economic activities within Kanke and it's environs is substantially driven by none indigenes and we must change the narrative of yester-years by giving our indigenes a chance to venture into businesses".

The Chairman emphasized that as a council, we must embrace and take an aggressive business approach or else our situation will continue to be deteriorating. "As part of the work-in-progress, we have reached out to some external investors that are ever willing to invest substantially in the MFB whenever they are invited (in the event we are unable to raise required capital)". He called on other interested investors to give it a shot.

He said,"It will interest you to know that, Microfinance Bank, is one basic tool for economic empowerment which can create a lot of opportunities especially for start-ups, capacity building, school fees, loans etc. The potentials is huge and enormous".

The Chairman used the opportunity to call on those who are known for unnecessary and non-objective criticism to hold their peace and let the new administration give this vision the necessary bite and concrete efforts it deserved to actualize the set goal, cautioning that it's not everything that must be politicized. He called on all to join hands with him to "rejig our economic potentials and come up with meaningful criticism that will help shape our democratic existence".

LESSON IN HOPE: A BRIEF CONVERSATION BETWEEN TWO FRIENDS

LESSON IN HOPE: A BRIEF CONVERSATION BETWEEN TWO FRIENDS

YILDUN: Yilrit, life is so difficult for men; I can't take it anymore. I want to die.

YILRIT: Yildun, my friend, you are dead already. You don't have to tell me.

YILDUN: Why will you say such a thing. I'm alive, but want to die.

YILRIT: No friend, you are dead, already. Your case is that of hopelessness and Hopelessness is as good as death. Only the living has hope!

YILDUN: What is hope?

YILRIT: Hope is being positive even with nothing. In other words, it is learning to be contented with nothing to fall back on!

YILDUN: I see ... So, what is your advice to me, friend?

YILRIT: Revive and keep your hope alive!

YILDUN: what does it take to keep hope alive?

YILRIT: Change your mindset. It is the mindset that wins!

YILDUN: But nothing is working again in this world!

YILRIT: Stop being ingrate. The air you breathe is working. You can even talk to me. Only the living talk.

YILDUN: I see...

YILRIT: Yes. You know I have virtually nothing. The difference between you and me is that I am an unrepentant optimist, but you live in pessimism.

YILDUN: I have been a pessimist, really!

YILRIT: Yes, and it is not good for you.

YILDUN: Thank you for your encouragement. I have decided that I won't die again!

YILRIT: Then you are alive and the pleasure is mine!

YILDUN: So where do we go from here?

YILRIT: Let's add diligence and hard work to our hope. Things are not working, but with these virtues, we can make the world a better place.

YILDUN: Ok. I'm willing and ready!

YILRIT: Thank you. If you are ready, then, let's go!

This conversation is a message of the audacity of hope. Things are difficult these days, but there is hope at the end of the tunnel. Do not give up, but keep hope alive.

As we hope for things to get better, the wisest thing to do is to be doing something worthwhile with our hands and intellects.

When things get so bad, they can get so good again. From YILDUN, we can be a YILRIT. It can only get better. Press on!

PANKSHIN APC STAKEHOLDERS HOLD EXTRA-ORDINARY MEETING

PANKSHIN APC STAKEHOLDERS HOLD EXTRA-ORDINARY MEETING

-Comment Ahmed Tinubu for exemplary leadership

-Adopted the Resolutions of the State Party's Extraordinary Stakeholders Meeting

-Express delight with the updated briefings on APC Cases in the Election Petition Tribunal;

-Commiserated with the Mangu people over the incessant killings in some parts of the LGA,

Pankshin APC Stakeholders have commended the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for showing exemplary leadership by taking immediate steps to reform the economic architecture of the country and the measures taken to cushion the effect of subsidy removal and enforcement of rule of law about the dissolution and suspension of elected Local Government Chairmen and Councilors, no matter which state is involved.

This was contained In a Communique which was signed by Acting Chairman of APC Pankshin Zakka Lengji and Presented by  Professor John Wokton Wade after the All Progressives Congress APC Pankshin Local Government Area Stakeholders Meeting on Saturday 15th July 2023.

The stakeholders unanimously adopted the Resolutions of the State Party's Extraordinary Stakeholders Meeting, held at APC Kalwa House, Jos under the able leadership of the immediate past Governor, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Simon Bako Lalong, KSG, CON remains the rallying point of APC in Plateau State. His phenomenal achievements are legendary and cannot be easily eroded.

Members equally agreed to collaborate and encourage each other, to remain steadfast, loyal and committed to the ideals and philosophy of the All-Progressives Congress, APC. And also resolved to consolidate on past gains, and where there are shortcomings, make amends.

The Meeting received with delight the updated briefings on APC Cases in the Election Petition Tribunal; the debt profile of Plateau state at the exit of the last regime and the present position of Pankshin Local Government Council. It was noted that, by the grace of God and so far, without prejudice, the various cases are good to go and there is clear hope of victory. The development is virtually like a student writing examination and from his instinct, knows whether he will pass or not.

With regards to the dissolution of Local Government Councils, the meeting noted and appreciated that the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) at both the National and State levels are providing desired leadership and direction, trusting that this will also come to pass. The meeting further noted and appreciated that there are two subsisting injunctions and one ruling, all in favour of ALGON, concerning reverting to Status Quo Ante, which the State Government flagrantly refused to obey.

On The Debt Profile Left by former Governor Lalong, the meeting appreciated that there are verifiable records through the portal of the Debt Management Office (DMO) at the State and National levels, to advance their position and defend the true position of issues. The meeting noted that the substantial debt carried over included substantial monies borrowed from the Jang administration whose Irrevocable Standing Payment Order (ISPO) extends to the year 2037!

The stakeholders noted with concern and dismay that a high-profile Transition and Strategic Planning Committee of a new regime, composed of Academics, Elder Statesmen and people trained in Public Policy and Strategic matters could allow themselves to be so gullible and manipulated into buying very cheap and false statements and narratives of blackmail and incorporated and presented such falsehood into its report. All these false narratives are in the name of begging for sympathy from the people, which so far have been ridiculous and laughable. Members are urged to always cross-check facts placed in the public domain by the opposition.

The meeting, on moral grounds, urged the government and appropriate authorities, that it is only expeditious to exhibit duty of care and ensure that policy statements are released based on truth of facts and not lies, blackmail and deception.

stakeholders commiserated with the Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency, Barrister Caleb Manassa Mutfwang and the elected Chairman of Mangu LGA, Hon. Minister Daput over the incessant killings in some parts of the LGA, which has led to the influx of displaced people mostly women and children in most parts of Pankshin LGA. The dexterity, diligence and duty of care of the Executive Chairman of Mangu LGA towards his people are well appreciated.

The meeting also noted and commended the past efforts of the Lalong’s Administration that had held regular Security Council Meetings (in fact, twice in May 2023 before expiration of tenure) that have often tremendously abated clashes; contrary to false propaganda that the administration never held Security Council Meeting for over one year.

The stakeholders commended the efforts and gallantry exhibited by the Military Personnel in reducing the escalation of the crisis and sustaining the peace.  They urged their members to render help where necessary and whenever they encounter such displaced people within their neighbourhood.

They solicited the cooperation of all members in exposing the activities of bandits across the state as their civic responsibility.

The Pankshin APC Stakeholders Extra-Ordinary Meeting was converged under the leadership of Hon. Nde Kakmena Audu Goteng, Executive Chairman of Pankshin LGC, and chaired by Acting Chairman of the Party, Hon. Nde Zakka Lengji. Present at the Meeting were, the twelve Federal Ward Chairmen; Ward Secretaries; Ward Women Leaders; Ward Youth Leaders; All LGA EXCO Members; Representatives of Elders Forum from each Ward; Physically Challenged Leaders; Critical Stakeholders in Jos; All Serving Ward Councilors; All present and former political appointees who are in APC.

LATE RABECCAH MAK'YAN WANNANG, A FULFILLED MARTRIARCH

*

(By Ayuba, Yilgak'ha, 08116181263)
In this glowing tribute, permit me to  start with a disclaimer that I have never met Late martriarch, Rabeccah Mak'yan Wannang in person but her children Mrs Josephine Bako, Mrs Martina Dakur, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Alex Wannang, Engineer. Christopher Wannang and Professor Noel Wannang who are touching lives everywhere and making huge waves in their respective areas of calling.

Without sounding immodest, today in Plateau and Nigeria, the Partriarchal name Wannang does not need any introduction because of the great exploits the Wannangs are making in many fields of human endeavour both within and outside Plateau State, that is, Nigeria and the world. These ones are highly resourceful people whose names can only be heard for good reasons!

The main thesis of this tribute is that a tree cannot bear good fruits if it is not good itself. With the great vibes and works I have seen in her children, it can be said, without mincing words, that Late martriarch Rabeccah Mak'yan Wannang was a great profile in good parenting.

Good parenting is about credible nurturing and cultivation of good virtues in a child or children. It is a critical catalyst that is lacking in most families which has caused hydra-headed problems in many societies, nations and the world today.

All social ills (drug abuse, rape, cultism, examination malpractices, prostitution); criminal activities such as armed robbery, cyber crime, murder; arson, violent conflicts and even wars that the world is battling today, drive from breakdown in the fundamentals of family units which Late Mak'yan who peacefully died on Monday, July 3, 2023 creditably managed hers at wow level, that is, excellent plus standard, to say the least!

Through credible paranting, Late Mak'yan has given Nigeria a tested and proven security expert, AIG Alex Wannang, to help Nigeria and, by extension, the world to maintain law and order through fighting of crime and criminality. You need to meet this rare gem to know the stuff he is made of courtesy the foundational starter fixes of the departed Martriarch.

Late Mak'yan also bequeathed to the world a world class pharmacist in Prof. Noel Wannang. There are professors but there is a professor. Professor Noel is an exceptionally brilliant thorough breed who has inspired and motivated countless pharmaceutical students in University of Jos. He is part of the phenomenal breakthroughs which has been made in pharmaceutical industries in Nigeria and has contributed greatly to quality control in this sphere in the country. In fact, the story of up coming generations of pharmists who have the potentials to transform the Pharmaceutical industries in Nigeria will not be completed without a mention of professor Wannang!

I wished you had met Late Engineer Martin Wannang to appreciate Late Mak'yan's prowess in parenting. The late Eng. had speciality in Water Engineering and died as Director of Works with the Local Government Service Commission, Plateau State. Then, we have  Christopher Wannang, another great Mak'yan legacy. He is Building Engineer who works with the Federal Ministry of Works, Abuja, with speciality in construction management.

Both Josephine and Marina are educationists. Josephine retired as the Principal of Federal Govt College, Zuru, Kebbi State in North Eastern Nigeria while Martina was Principal in several schools in Plateau State and retired as a Permanent Secretary with the Plateau State Government. This further confirmed how the Mak'yans extended have continue to touch lives across the length and breadth of Nigeria.

As can be seen, Late martriarch Rabeccah Mak'yan's Midas touch cannot be contested. She was the proverbial goose that laid golden eggs. Indeed, her womb is exceptionally blessed and the breast her children soaked was pure gold. She taught her children the way of success in human relations, intellectualism, professionalism and, more importantly, the love of God who is the sufficiency of all mortals!

There are no liabilities in the Wannang dynasty. When I received the news of the demise of this Late martriarch Rebeccah, my reaction after consoling the children which I have encountered on different occasions is simple: "Seeing how far you, the children have come, I can say with all confidence that mama is not dead but living in the exceptionally productive offsprings she left behind!"

Martriarch Mak'yan is gone but she is here with us yet. She is  here through here resourceful children and through her children's children. This martriarch was a legacy in uncommon blessing to the world courtesy child bearing and nurturing in the ways of cherishable virtues and values.

The children of the deceased enjoyed their Amazon mother like no other. The evidence of this enviable mother-children bonding was expressed in the text of the burial notification as follows: "Mama, it is our wish that you live forever but it is a painful gain that heavens will celebrate your coming." It was a family of lovebird and losing the strategic modeller, stabiliser, encourager and energiser can be demoralising or, at least, an eye flipping experience but can God be questioned? Not alll!

Anyway, death is part of the rhythms of life. There is time for everything: A time to smile and a time to mourn. As many as our opportunities to smile, so also are our possibilities to mourn too. This means that as long as men live, chances are that they will experience both. Glory be to God who is the author and finisher of our faith. He gave Late Mak'yan Wannang but He takes too. Thanks be to the giver and taker for the benefit of having her as a mother and channel of blessing to humanity!

Thank God, also, for longevity. At 92, Late Mak'yan was about a century old sorjourning here on earth. Only a few had such rarest privilege; considering that the 2022 life expectancy which is the most recent in Nigeria is 55.44 per cent. It is heart warning to note that the departed Amazon had a colourful and beautiful page here on earth and we are hoping she is transiting into another eventful life in the great beyond.

This moment is a mourning period but, for all intents and purposes, a celebration one. My humble prayer, therefore is that oh Lord, bless the world, Nigeria and Plateau with many more of Wannangs. Let Late Martriarch Rabeccah Mak'yan Wannang who has been established to be springboard of resourcefulness continue to smile in restful mood as the world and the family she serves with greater distinction commits her to mother earth at family compound Vel, Pankshin, come Thursday, July 12, 2023!

PROSTITUTION AS REVERSED CIVILISATION

(Modest Thoughts with Ayuba, Yilgak'ha, July 1, 2023; 08116181263)

Prostitution is one of the age old problems of man. Though an underground or shadow practice in many countries, it is estimated in the report of Foundation Scelles (2016) in Encyclopaedia Britannica (2023) that, globally, there are between 40 - 42 million people practicing commercial sex out of which between 8 - 8.42 million were thought to be men. In Nigeria, the estimate of women who are into transactional sex is put at 103,506 as reported UNAIDS in 2019 and the number is counting.

In Plateau state, there are no short of prostitutes in major towns, especially, the Jos Bukuru metropolis. A drive around old airport junction, Hill Station Junction, Gada Biu-Zaria road, Double-Dollar, Bukuru express, etc. will convince anyone of how bad the situation has become in the highly religious state capital.

Basically, prostitution is the practice of engaging in sexual activity for payment. The phenomenon, also called "hook up" in local jargon, is a form of disservice to one's self and humanity. It is evidence of poor value judgement which seeks to pursue wealth through unacceptably lazy and leisure means rather than hard but legitimate means. This has a destructive repacaution as contained in the book of Proverbs 21:25: "The desire of a lazy man kills him, for his hands refuse to labour."

Against the erroneous insinuation that prostitution is better stealing, the practice of transactional sex is a dent on human progress. It is a demeaning orientation that does not project human dignity. It is dehumanising, degrading, immoral and perversed means of survival which can be ranked side by side with criminal tendencies like drug abuse; pornography, trafficking in persons, contrabands, bunkering, etc.

No legitimate economy can be created or made from these rotten moral enterprises called prostitution. To be under any of the underground ventures and feel comfortable is to be under a subtly toxic, corrosive and destructive spell which erodes one's personal dignity and pride in the community of people, that is, if the practitioner(s) survive it; otherwise, it kills outright!

Prostitution is a degrading adventure. It creates an elicit and unlawful economy which is not tax worthy. It is a broad way to pleasure but gateway to shame. It is a runway to pleasure but crumbling and shortest distance to the grave.

Prostitutes are naked. No matter the quality of fabric they wear, the clothes have holes and their nakedness is evident. The simple reason is that many including nerds, dirty people both in character and physical appearance.

One of the major problems with prostitution is not prostitution itself but patronage. Prostitution sets a profound problem: Why is it that a practice so thoroughly disapproved, so widely outlawed in western civilisation, can yet flourish so universally?, Asked a sociologist Kingsley Davis in an article titled, 'The sociology of Prostitution'.

Like all other illicit ventures such as the sell and consumption of hard drugs (doing drugs) or endulging in criminal activities such as armed robbery, cybercrime, smuggling, cultism, examination malpractices, Rape, etc, prostitution is a dangerous gateway and point of contact to hydra-headed social problems like addiction, Sexually transmitted Diseases (STDs), etc. A prostitute is an untamed possibility in crime and an active suspect in the act of aiding and abading criminals or criminality.

Even though, men can be prostitutes, prostitution is associated more with the female folks. It is a misguided and dishonest activity that is tended toward messing up the practitioners in the most subtle manner. In the words of Oliver, a contact on my phone, dated June 30, 2023, "Once you place your value on money as a lady, there are men who are willing to pay just to mess you up. There is no honest way to state the obvious than this. The prostitute gets the money but the expense of her human dignity!

Prostitution for all intents and purposes is a profile in reversed civilisation. It is a moral disorientation that tends to make a jest of the collective sensibilities of humans. The practice of it can only make sense within the realm of 'animal spirits, that is, randomness which cannot be explained. The irony is that even animals do not indulge in it.

Prostitution is a bestial social order. It is an activity of altered species of mankind who are bereft of the capacity to create value. It is socially unacceptable service of perishing folks who do not want to die alone. Indeed, prostitution is a drag net toward eternal demnation. It is a crusher on one's self worth.

Having x-rayed prostitution for what it true means, there is need for reorder and reorientation among females folk who are into it or contemplating a trial. Here is a profound counsel from "The Female Hustlers", a female social media platform which focuses on promoting the dignity of women in the social space: "Find yourself... Don't be a female with no sense of direction, thinking of nothing but looking good, turning up and seeking a man. Don't ever be the type of girl who is worth nothing more than just a pretty face and body to lust for and sleep with. Increase your value and preserve it." Reading and meditation on this counsel could help a great deal.

Understood, those engaged in commercial or transactional sex will obviously cite economic frustrations for it but the excuse is not morally and economically correct. For emphasis sake, it should be recalled that there is no legitimate economy in prostitution but an illicit drain legit economy of gullible me. Prostitution is a dubious massage on the drive towards vain orgies. It is a morally cheap armed robber which stripped weak men of their sense of personal honour and discipline.

Difficult times could trigger desperate tendencies or actions in men but it can be managed with strong character. Hear what John Maxwell has to say: "A difficult time can be more readily endured if we retain the conviction that our existence holds a purpose - a cause to pursue, a person to love, a goal to achieve!"

When a man is strong willed and character stable, he must stand for upper ends in his fragile life. In this light, John Foster has this to say: "He who would do some great thing in this short life, must apply himself to the work with such a concentration of his forces as to the idle spectators, who live only to amuse themselves, looks like insanity." This means that lazy and dubious  practices prostitution is a failure of reason, focus and the will to dare to achieve great things through hard work.

The most honourable thing to do in trying times is to always learn to adjust and face the difficult situations in the most responsibly decent manner not to concede to weak and regrettable actions. On this one Zig Ziglar counsels as follow: "When obstacles arise, you change your direction to reach your goal, you do not change your decision to get there!". The goal is a constant but strategy can change to make it more effective, efficient and, more importantly, morally decent.

If you stand for something, you cannot fall for just anything or everything. There is no place for prostitution in the kingdom of sane and hard working people. Only the lazy and morally derailed minds do that and I hope the one reading this is not or should not be one, no matter the hardship!
