PLASU's Alfalfa Project Poised to Transform Livestock Farming and Mitigate herders farmers feud in Nigeria and beyond.

A one-day Green Field Day on Alfalfa Adaptability and Performance Trials, held at Plateau State University (PLASU), has concluded on a positive note.

The alfalfa project, sponsored by Alternative Bank, aims to create wealth and generate income for households through the production of the highly nutritious forage,Known as the "queen of forage," alfalfa which is high in crude protein and is easily digestible for cattle, sheep, goats, and other ruminants is also great in it's ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen improves soil fertility, which helps reduce pressure on natural grazing lands.

In his keynote address on the theme "Forage Innovation and Sustainable Livestock Development in Plateau State," the Vice-Chancellor of Plateau State University, Professor Shadrack Best, stated: "We are not simply observing crops,we are witnessing a future of sustainable agriculture. Alfalfa is more than just a forage,it is the cornerstone of healthy soil, a natural nitrogen fixer, and a key to reducing environmental degradation."

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Associate Professor Keziah Ayuba, Professor Best added, "The work we do here in the Faculty of Agriculture at Plateau State University, Bokkos, is a research effort that we will share to everyone here today. These technicalities are all part of a larger global effort to feed a growing population while preserving our most precious resource, the land. Let's use this day to learn from each other, celebrate the success of the alfalfa research here on the Plateau, and commit to a future where our farms are not just productive but truly regenerative for the growth of Plateau State and Nigeria as a whole."

On his part, Plateau State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Veterinary Services, and Fisheries, Dr. Sunday Akpa, said: "With alfalfa, the time has come and the opportunities are so great. People can go into forage production by growing alfalfa and making money." He added that Plateau State would soon have people earning a living from forage production, as one doesn't need to own cattle to engage in the business.

In her remarks, the Head of Agri-Finance at Alternative Bank, Ugonwa Ikegwuonu, spoke about the mix of preparation, inspiration, and presentation involved in the project. Recalling the initial challenges and obstacles, she wondered if the effort was worth the pain. She described the outcomes as an "unexpected success story" and expressed gratitude for the show of support and solidarity from the entire management team of the Plateau State Ministry of Livestock Development, Veterinary Services, and Fisheries, led by the Commissioner, Dr. Sunday Akpa. The event drew critical stakeholders, including traditional rulers, farmers, and representatives of Fulani herders and other agricultural projects from both federal and state levels. The day concluded with a field visit to the alfalfa farm.

KASHAM AT ONE: A CELEBRATION OF LIFE AND FIRST FRUIT OF A FAMILY

On 5th September, 2024, favour smiles the way of the family of DSI Benedict Akaahs, as his wife, Mrs Ofure Benedict, the Jewel from Benin Kingdom, put to bed a bouncing baby girl. So cheering was the news of the safe delivery.

Kasham Teresa became the name, the parents with the blessings of their parents, gave the baby. This name I learned, literally, means a beautiful and adorable gift. What a nice name to answer!

It is true: 'Children are a heritage from the LORD; offering, a reward from him.... Happy is the man whose quiver is full of them' (Psalm 127:3 & 5).

One year down the line, Kasham, the beautiful gift and blessing from God, with the parents and well wishers, is celebrating the gift of her life. This is just nice!

I am glad to be a witness to Kasham's birth and her steady growth, and pray she grows more in wisdom and stature.

May Kasham grows to be the pride of the family and a huge blessing to humanity.

May Kasham finds favour in the sight of God and, in the sight people.

May God shield her from every visible and invisible harm, and grant her peace always.

As a womb opener, may other blessed babies, come to be her sisters and/or brothers.

May the babies coming behind find an exemplary  senior in her!

Whatever Kasham needs to be her best in this life, may God bring such her way!

It will not be long
It will not be long
When the old and the young
Males and females from the hills of Kagoro will speak and
The consensus from every end will be
Kasham has done us proud Kasham has done us well.

Kasham kasham Daughter of a people so nice
The blessing from the Most High
The grace of God is risen upon you. You shall go to higher places of importance in this terrestrial space!

Teresa Teresa, your name shall be a reference point and never will it be mentioned in wrong spaces.

In the order of our great mother Teresa, the icon of love and the timeless virtues, your parents and grandparents, whom i have come to know closely, live by, your star will shine and transcend your generation. Amen!

Happy birthday and congratulations on your celebration of life, Kasham Teresa. God's  blessing upon you and your parents!

STAKEHOLDERS RESOLVE ON EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS IN PLATEAU STATE

WALBE ORGAK

Jos, August 28, 2025 – The Plateau State Ministry of Education has convened a stakeholders’ engagement meeting to address pressing issues affecting the education sector and to adopt new measures aimed at improving standards across schools in the state.

After extensive deliberations, several key resolutions were reached. Among them, stakeholders agreed that students are to purchase only textbooks and use notebooks for assignments, while workbooks are to be phased out. Textbooks must be sourced directly from publishers to ensure quality and curb piracy, with the Ministry of Education (MoE) enforcing compliance.

On graduation ceremonies, it was resolved that such events will henceforth be restricted to BECE 3 and SS3 classes. Students will wear only school uniforms, while graduation gowns, “signing out” exercises, and after-parties are prohibited.

Extra lessons were pegged as optional and limited to secondary schools, with priority given to English and Mathematics. Schools at all levels were reminded to strictly adhere to official closing and resumption dates.

Other resolutions include:

  • Every school must establish a functional Parents-Teachers Association (PTA).
  • Schools are to maintain only one official uniform with a cardigan and games wear.
  • Examination bodies—WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB—were directed to harmonize timetables to prevent clashes and to intensify efforts against examination malpractice.
  • Corporal punishment is discouraged, with emphasis on corrective disciplinary measures.
  • Assistant teachers are to support classroom teaching and not be diverted to personal errands for school heads.

Stakeholders further urged regular school inspections, proper monitoring of enrollment age brackets, and continuous engagement with education partners.

In his remarks, WAEC officials appealed to the government for assistance with student registration fees and pledged to work closely with the Ministry to promote educational excellence.

The resolutions were presented by Bawa Ishaya M., Vice Chairman, Voluntary Agencies and Community Schools, who emphasized that the reforms are vital for restoring discipline, quality, and equity in Plateau State’s education system.
